Wednesday 9th August – bike **** Around Felixstowe – sunny and warm.

The summer is back, a lovely sunny warm day here in Felixstowe, usual morning, me exercises in the back garden while Mag did loads of work in the front garden. Then I packed a picnic and with headed out on our bikes trying to avoid using as many roads as possible as Mag is still nervous of using them and I don’t blame her after her accident, she still has trouble holding her handle bars properly! We made it to Trimley turning down Station Road leading to Cordys Lane and the Suffolk Wildlife nature reserve at Trimley marshes. You meet the River Orwell at the end of Felixstowe docks where a huge container ship was being unloaded. I cycled along the river wall path while Mag used the lower path, the tide was fairly low and there were loads of yachts out on the water. We meet an old birdwatching friend, Roger out on his electric bike and scope enjoying the lovely weather. After a chat we continued to the creek where we sat with a fantastic view of the Orwell with Levington marina to the right, the picnic was yummy indeed:) There were a few birds in the mud as the tide slowly came in including an egret, godwits and many gulls, well rested we returned to the winter flood bird hide where we sat for ages watching the wildlife over a cuppa and chocolate bar. It was a good afternoon for spotting too, Mag quickly saw the Chinese water deer, very common here, a marsh harrier, avocets, godwits, shovelers, lapwings, maybe some cattle egrets and a sedge warbler, swans and a heron but the star of the show was the many Chinese water deer in the beds of daisies, just lovely. Well rested to then headed for home meeting friends Chris and Marion also out on their bikes. Home for a well-deserved cuppa – top day!
PS - always nice to get a pic in the local paper too:)
